I've been talking to Sleepy Brett about a piece of VJ Software he is working on. The problem with a lot of computer-based music and video software is that its hard drive it with a mouse and a typing keyboard. Other input devices are needed. Knobs are the natural choice. Musicians have known this for a while, and there are a number of MIDI devices that are nothing but a box with knobs on it. You can hook this up to your computer and, with the right software, use it to control all sorts of things.
A couple of DIY knob boxes:
The best one so far: MIDIBox 16E

I've recently been interested in collecting field recordings of traditional music from around the world. One series that has impressed me is the Nonesuch Records Explorer Series. Amazon has all of them, of course. I bought their Burkina Faso - Rhythms Grasslands disc and was not disappointed.

Here are some great high-res shots from the 60's moon landings. The raw data you don't get to see much.

This weekend I wore the Crow Costume in a huge march against War In Iraq. Lots of people took my picture, which kindof surprised me.
It was really encouraging to be part of such a large, diverse, and well-mannered crowd.
Despite the raised voices, I remain cynical, and I suspect that Bush will get his war anyhow.

I've volunteered server space and technical expertise to Voices for Peace as part of my hope that our leaders will not drag us kicking and screaming into more War.
Please take a look at the site, put together by Kyra and add your name and your voice.

So I got a GPS for my birthday this year. Thanks, Dad!
So its got me thinking about GPS-aware mobile sculptures at burningman. I read something about it on a fellow burner's blog. He suggested there could be mobile party platforms that convene at particular coordinates at an arranged time.
I think it would be very cool to build a series of mobile sculptures that do that sort of thing. They would need some sort colision-avoidance gear, but otherwise creep slowly about.
Since I've been playing with perl a lot, and its so easy to write things that work in perl, I'd probably use that.

I haven't posted since before Burningman. I've been coasting on a wave of laziness, combined with a desire to get out and do shit. So, now that we are decellerating into the Dark Part Of The Year, I want to start using this blog as a tool to catalyze ideas into action.
Some ideas:
Do Yoga twice a week.
Learn more Perl. (write a web-services interface for KEXP's live program listing.
Make metal art with glass and LEDs in it.
